Pinched Nerve Chiropractic Care: Treatments Often Used

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the basics on pinched nerves and how they can sometimes arise as a symptom following a car accident. Pinched nerves are a kind of nerve damage that takes place due to pressure on the nerve, which can sometimes be caused by the impact of a car accident along with other conditions like whiplash.

At Peterson Chiropractic, we’re happy to provide Salt Lake City and other Utah clients with a full range of car accident chiropractic care services for any injury you may have sustained, including pinched nerve issues. Today’s part two of our series will continue where we left off, looking at some of the specific ways a chiropractor may look to treat a pinched nerve following a car accident.

Massage Therapy

While we discussed the use of a spinal adjustment in part one of our series, and this will often be the first course of action recommended by a chiropractor, massage therapy is another approach that can be used to treat pinched nerves. Massage works to relax muscle tissue around the nerve that could be putting pressure on it and causing pain.

This can allow for more mobility in the area which can reduce pain caused by the pinched nerve and may even lead to resolution of the issue. Massage therapy is often used in conjunction with spinal adjustment to provide an overall therapeutic experience for the patient and help them work towards recovering from their pinched nerve injury.

Physical Therapy

Another modality that may be recommended by a car accident chiropractor for pinched nerve issues is physical therapy. Physical therapy involves exercises and other treatments that can help to stretch and strengthen the muscles around the pinched nerve. The goal of physical therapy is to reduce tissue pressure on the nerve while also helping to improve overall range of motion and strength in affected areas.

Physical therapy can also be used in combination with massage or spinal adjustments for a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to each individual patient’s needs.

Cryotherapy

In some other cases, the use of cold therapy (or cryotherapy) may be recommended for the treatment of pinched nerves. This can involve the use of cold or ice packs to help reduce inflammation and swelling in the region that is causing pain. Cryotherapy is thought to offer temporary relief from inflammation, which can then allow for more mobility and reduced pressure on the nerve.
