Auto Accident Chiro Techniques: Spinal and Electrical

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the techniques chiropractors often use when treating people who have been injured in a car accident. We looked specifically at the realm of manual therapy, which involves a few different techniques that are all focused on treating various bruises to muscles and ligaments.

At Peterson Chiropractic, we’re happy to offer a number of auto accident injury care services from our top chiropractors, including both manual therapy and other formats. What are some of the additional methods often used for patients with these needs? Here’s a simple primer.

Spinal Manipulation

Also simply known as chiropractic adjustment, the other most common area of treatment for car accident injuries is spinal manipulation. This practice works by manipulating the vertebrae in the spine in order to reduce pressure on nerves and treat pain or discomfort caused by a misalignment of the bones.

There are several specific forms of spinal manipulation that our chiropractors use, including:

  • Spinal Mobilization: This involves moving the joints in a specific direction and applying pressure in order to manipulate the vertebrae.
  • Manual Thrusts: A manual thrust is when a specific force is applied directly to the joint. This helps restore normal ranges of motion.
  • Activator Method: A specialized tool called the activator is used to perform a gentle thrust that helps restore movement and reduce pain.

Massage Therapy

While some consider massage therapy to be part of the larger manual therapy category, it is often more closely associated with relaxation practices. Massage therapy helps relax the muscles and connective tissue to reduce tension and improve mobility, which can be especially beneficial for those recovering from a car accident.

For instance, deep tissue massage is a form of therapy that helps release toxins and relieve deep-seated muscular tension. Trigger point therapy also focuses on helping to release pain in specific areas, while Swedish massage is more of a full body relaxation technique that boosts circulation and range of motion.

Electrical Stimulation

Finally, for certain situations, use of a process known as inferential electrical muscle stimulation (IEMS) may be employed. This technology involves sending a low energy electrical pulse to target areas of the body, which can help reduce inflammation and stimulate muscles for increased blood flow and improved healing. It will often be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment, such as manual therapy.

At Peterson Chiropractic, our chiropractors are highly trained in all of these different forms of treatment for car accident injuries, so you can be sure that you’re getting the best care possible.
